ADR Training Courses

Ritchies Training Centre have approval from the Department for Transport and Scottish Qualification Authority to run ADR Course, we are also approved by The National Dangerous Goods Training Consortium, who are an independant body who also ensure the training we offer is to the highest standard.
Drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods in tanks and in packages must be in possession of an ADR vocational training certificate.
An ADR certificate is valid for 5 years.
Scottish Qualification Authority
SQA are the appointed agent of the Department for Transport. It is responsible for matters relating to approved centres, examinations, the issue of results and arrangements for the issue of ADR certificates to successful candidates. There will be a delay between taking the course and candidates receiving their certificate.

Classes of dangerous goods
There are nine classes of dangerous goods.
Class 1 Explosives
Class 2 Gases
Class 3 Flammable Liquids Dangerous Goods Training
Class 4 Flammable solids
Class 5 Oxidisers Organic Peroxides Dangerous Goods Training
Class 6 Toxics / Infectious
Class 7 Radioactive Dangerous Goods Training
Class 8 Corrosive Dangerous Goods Training
Class 9 Miscellaneous
Training Courses
To qualify for an ADR vocational training certificate, drivers must undertake a course of training at an approved centre and pass the examinations relevant to the class(es) of dangerous goods to be carried. Candidates will receive a copy of the course programme at the start of their training course.

Type of vehicle
Drivers of vehicles carrying in-scope dangerous goods in packages will require passing the ‘other than tank section’. For drivers of tankers with a capacity greater than 1,000lts or a tank container with a capacity greater than 3,000lts they will be required to take the ‘tank’ section of the course.
Examinations
Multiple-choice examinations will be taken at the end of the course.
Adding classes/ tanker module to an ADR certificate
It is possible to add further categories / classes onto an existing certificate at any point before the expiry of the ADR certificate. Drivers wishing to add classes of dangerous goods on to their certificate must undertake an initial training course for those classes modules and complete the appropriate examinations. A new ADR certificate will then be issued with the SAME date of expiry as the original ADR certificate. The additional modules will only be valid until this date, and should be refreshed along with the rest of the ADR certificate.
Renewal of ADR certificates
In order to renew an ADR certificate before its expiry date, it will be necessary to undertake a refresher-training course and to pass the examinations to the classes of dangerous goods to be carried. A renewal certificate will only apply to the classes on the existing ADR certificate. New classes and/or containment can only be added by undertaking initial training. Candidates are recommended to make arrangements to renew certificates well before the expiry date.
Refresher course (4 week rule)
A MINIMUM of 4 weeks must be allowed for a course to be complete and certificates despatched to successful candidates. If there is less than 4 weeks left to run from the date of the examinations till the expiry of the certificate the candidate will not be allowed to take the refresher course, an initial ADR course and examinations would be have to be taken.
This time allowance assumes that all components are completed successfully on one occasion; failure in a compulsory module would extend the time period required to renew an ADR certificate.
Failure in any refresher module requires the candidate to undertake a full initial training course and examinations for those modules affected.
Explosives and Radioactive modules
The Explosives and Radioactive modules are NOT part of our standard courses (initial or refresher). These modules require attendance on an additional one-day course (for each module) followed by examination. You must specify that you require these modules and that the course booking form when received confirms that these sections are included.
There is not a particularly high demand for these modules and they are run on an irregular basis.
Lunch
Canteen facilities are located nearby and can be use by our students. These facilities are not available during any weekend courses or during public or bank holidays.
